THIS WORLD’S ALL OURS! is a horny tale of reckless adventure where the End of the world is just the beginning.
The story takes place in the years after the End in a flooded Indonesia. Our narrator Ged, a 15 year old American orphan, will be the first to tell you he hasn’t had the best luck. A killer city, slavers and pimps, battling gangers and the Admiral, a sinister, evangelical American psychopath set to create a new Jerusalem with her child warriors — not to mention Ged’s own dark deeds — are all coming for him. It’s a world of trouble where surviving is the least of his problems.
The book opens with Ged running for his life from the Admiral. After a narrow, bloody escape he is saved by Matty, a 17-year-old fellow orphan and refugee with an even crazier past than Ged’s. He adopts Ged and together, living on Matty’s little boat, they work the channels and alleys of Stiltcity delivering dodgy cargo for Matty's bosses, the Sisters. Ged can’t believe his luck. He feels safe again for the first time in years and better yet finally has a family again in Matty, the amazing older brother he never had. The only problem: Ged fell madly in love with Matty the minute he saw him. Not wanting to wreck a good thing, Ged spends most of the next year trying hard to bury his feelings. It’s not easy. It’s a year of mixed messages (from Matty) and frustrated, confused longing (from Ged) and the most fun Ged has ever had in his life. Just when he discovers that Matty may not be as off limits as he thought their world blows up all over again. Good luck, bad luck every time. After fleeing down the Java coast they rescue a couple of refugees from a slaughtered camp and discover just how far the Admiral is willing to go to further her evil plans. Plans that maybe definitely involve Ged. And that’s before they get caught up in the schemes of a double crossing billionaire arms dealer from Matty’s past and Matty has to climb back into the ring to fight for Ged’s life.
This is the book I was searching for all my reading life. I never found it, so here we are: A Queer picaresque with lots of sex, drugs, violence, and most of all, love. It reflects, and offers a much-needed escape from (for me at least), these pre-apocalyptic times we are living through. I hope you enjoy it.
